Dry needling is a technique commonly used to reduce muscle tension and pain. It involves inserting single use, sterilised acupuncture needles into the affect muscle, targeting its trigger points. These myofascial trigger points are felt in the muscles as those ‘tender’ or ‘hard’ knots and can be quite uncomfortable when touched or massaged. The needle acts to stimulate the nervous system and increase blood flow into the area, reducing the tissues sensitivity to pain.
Some conditions where dry needling has been demonstrated to be a very effective treatment include:
• Sciatica and piriformis syndrome
• Headaches and neck pain
• Postural tension
• Low back, mid back and rib pain
• Muscle strains
• Tendinopathies
